Edible Eastside and Carrot City

The exhibition featured in Edible Eastside for two weeks, cumulating in a seminar event featuring Joe Nasr, Mike Dring and Jarred Henderson. A full review of this event can be found on the Growing Birmingham site.

Edible Eastside was perhaps the first time Carrot City was situated on a working urban agricultural project and allowed visitors to not just engage with the boards, but a working inner-city site. Jayne Bradley’s site remains open throughout the week, whilst Carrot City has now moved to MADE until early June.

The Millennium Point segment of the Carrot City exhibition finished on a high with two large events:

Firstly, on Thursday the 19th April, a half-day event was held in the Birmingham School of the Built Environment. This seminar featured a riveting key note by Andre Viiljoen (University of Brighton) before Anne Cranston (Groundwork West Midlands) and Jayne Bradley (Edible Eastside) spoke about urban agriculture in the local context. This event attracted over 50 delegates throughout the day, and cumulated with a site visit to Jayne’s Edible Eastside. Here are the slides: Andre Viljoen (forthcoming), Anne Cranston’s Slides, Jayne Bradley (forthcoming).

The second seminar featured Nick Grayson, Climate Change and Sustainability Manager for Birmingham City Council. Nick spoke about the city’s strategies and the need for local food in Birmingham. In particular, Nick highlighted the need for the authority to recognise productive land and facilitate food growing in the urban context. Slides from this presentation are also available on this page: Nick Grayson’s Presentation.
